When designing a bathroom, achieving a functional sense of relaxation is usually the ultimate goal. This can be tough though because most of the materials used in a bathroom are hard and cold, like tile. Pairing the harder elements with softer ones can be the key to creating that coveted oasis you want to shower in every day.
This 40 sq. ft. bathroom had dated and dark materials, a 3’x3’ shower, and a double vanity. We took our time looking for inspiration and really defining what was most important - an overall brighter space, a larger shower, and maximum storage. Below was some of our inspiration.
What to Consider When Doing a Bathroom Remodel
White on White
Want to make the space look larger and super bright? Choose white finishes. In this extra small space, we went with a classic yet modern approach with white, matte wall subway tile, marblized octagon floor tiles, and quartz accents.
Recessed Shelving is your Best Friend
Recessed shelving is magic in the sense that it makes spaces look sleek while actually expanding the space. In such a small space, this is the way to go. Traditional shelving protrudes out and makes the space feel even more cramped than it already is. We put in recessed shelves behind the shower and stocked it with linens and baskets for concealed storage. We also used a medicine cabinet over the sink which was recessed into the wall for smaller storage like toothbrushes. Also consider using a recessed shelf in the shower for all of the bottles!
Use Lots of Glass
That medicine cabinet duels as a mirror and a room enhancer! We placed ours directly across from the window which not only reflects tons of natural light but also makes the space feel larger. And one of the most exciting upgrades was trading in the shower curtain for a glass spray panel, which in this case, made the bathroom feel twice as big.
Cut Corners
Ok, not really. What I mean by this is to try to use the least amount of materials as possible. For instance, if you want a shower bench, consider a floating corner piece like we used. It’ll save space and money!
Add Texture Any Chance You Get
Show off the linens! They are soft and can add color or pattern to a cold space. Try rolling them for an elevated look. Place baskets on shelves to store larger items like toilet paper and extra bottles of shampoo. Select a light fabric for the window treatments. Add artwork with an unfinished wooden frame. Use plants in empty corners! Some plants are known to thrive in the shower! My favorite are air plants.
And my final tip is sort of a personal pet peeve but it’ll go a long way - hide the waste basket. Nobody wants to see what’s in there. Use a basket with a lid or create an alcove in the shelving area like we did.
